Las Valientes Blogs
Week 1:
Something that strikes me about the workplace is the different amount of cases there is. At first I was surprised with how much patience Dr. Ana Serrano had, but after learning that she has been helping the community for 21 years, I realize how she was able to get to the place she is now. Something that strikes me was I was able to listen in during a session Dr. Ana Serrano had with her clients. Or when Letty was filling documents with the client. I'm looking forward to the events Las Valientes will be holding.
Week 2:
Something I am learning about myself as a worker in a professional environment is that I have been well prepared with collaborating and communicating, thanks to high tech. Working with others at school, even if I thought it was pointless sometimes, helped prepare me for the real life because even if you don't want to socialize you are going to have to, with any type of job you are going to have. My strengths are being able to observe and listen to everything around me. Since there are a lot of moving parts at Las Valientes its important to be able to listen and observe and note down what I learned for internship assignments. I enjoy when people are able to finally achieve what they want. When they find a solution to a very saddening situation. I have noticed that I enjoy work when I am assigned to finish or work on a project. I want to improve my public speaking or how I explain my thinking. I didn't work before this internship so I guess this is my first job. The work I am doing is similar to my 10th grade project because we were focusing on the criminal justice system and justice and general. We didn't talk about court forms though. This experience has made me realize that I was overthinking about how a first job would look like. This experience has made me have a more positive outlook on getting my first paying job.
Week 3:
I am currently making my project from an idea to a final product by asking my mentor questions, looking for answers and putting them and formatting them into my guide. I will then get critique so I can make any necessary changes. I will then print out the small packet in both English and Spanish. I measure my work by keeping track of what happens throughout the day. I have a notebook I keep with me while I am at internship. I also made a list of things I needed to get done and by when. I am learning that it is important to have a schedule and that writing notes is also important because I can always go back and see any information I need. Appreciating good communication and social skills. You can learn so much from a new person. By having good communication skills the people who work at Las Valientes are able to find new business to help because they have given so much to Las Valientes. The impact these organization receive when helping one another is not only helping the business but the many people that come to these organizations. This internship might influence me to choose a different future career.
Week #4
We were talking about what our daily schedules looked liked, what we have learned from our internships and the projects we are working on. We were talking about IPOLs, TPOLs and how we are preparing for them. It was nice to know that other people felt the same way as I did towards the assignments and projects we have to do and the deadlines we are supposed to complete them by.

Week #5
This project was important because this will help the clients that come to Las Valientes have more of an understanding on how the legal system works in California. Its important that the guide was in two languages because most of the clients who come are Hispanic or Latinx people that come from Latin america. In the first week of working on this I was brainstorming on how I was going to organize the guide. At first I was working on the introduction, then I worked on defining what adoption, child support etc worked in California. I was then going to include some examples of different forms someone would need to fill out in certain situations. I was then going to include some of peoples stories so we can see how the documents were used to get to a certain outcome. After the third week I hadn't of worked on the section of peoples stories yet so I decided I wasn't going to do that since I didn't want to rush that process of interviewing. I wanted to actually sit down with both a past client and mentor to learn how they were able to get a positive outcome in their situation because of the documents. So I decided to put all my focus on finding all the documents that someone would need in certain situations. That is the thing that took the most amount of time.
Internship Reflection
Will I get to go file paperwork to the courthouse with Letty? Communication with your colleagues is really important in their job. I feel like working in groups and collaborating over the years at high tech has prepared me. I don't think I can talk about the situations other people are going through. Las Valientes helps woman and men who are experiencing domestic violence. They help with divorce papers, child custody, restraining orders, supervised visits, parenting classes. They also have an immigration attorney at the office on Fridays. Dr Ana doesn't only help with the legal side of these situations, she is also there for them emotionally. I will need to develop good memorization and people skills. I have earned a lot more than I though I would have in the first week.
Internship Project
Most of the people coming to Las Valientes are Hispanic or Latinx woman or men. Some of them don't understand how the legal system of the U.S.works, so I decided to make a guide to the U.S. legal system for them. Inside the document I explain the different documents, when and how they are used and different experiences these survivors had and how the documents played into that.

This is what my project looked like while I was working on it. There have been multiple changes throughout this process. There is a button aboove the slideshow where you can press to read a PDF of my project.
This is an invitation for the upcoming fundraising event I saw when I was shadowing the secretary of Las Valientes.
|
This is the cake we had at the fundraising event. Before having all the things needed for the event, I shadowed the fundraising director for Las Valientes and saw how she communicated with sponsors and other interested people who made it possible to hold the event.
|
I helped out with serving strawberries and cream to the customers at the strawberry festival in vista.
I went a business meeting with my mentor. There were members from the vista chamber of commerce and basically the meeting was everyone talking about what they do, why they do it and important advice when starting a business or organization.
|
It was a lot of business and organizations fundraising or getting out their information to the crowd.
I went to a meeting with the fundraising director and my mentor with a person who is able to help get funds from important people. The meeting was about how people with a good amount of money donate to others or find a new way to invest their money to make some more after they've sold their business, an example.
